One thing I miss from cable
 

Don't get me wrong but the one thing I wish DTV had was a local weather station. It's not enough to make me switch back, but I find it inconvenient. With the new satellite and spot beams why can't DTV send a local forcast station to people who subscribe to their local channels.

One thing I miss about cable is having everything in western feeds. :) Convincing enough to make me switch back once my contract is done.

One thing I miss from cable is unexplained outages. We were visiting my inlaws on Saturday. Their cable kept cutting in and out every few minutes for about a half hour period. It was a beautiful sunshiny day. I guess it must have been sun fade.

Because under current methods of satellite delivery, that would require 106 additional channels. One for each market. DirecTV does not have the space to do this. If they did, they would prefer to offer an additional 15 - 20 local markets instead.

And find the weather for your ZIP code. That will be faster and more localized than any forecast on TV.

Get a DVR and watch everything at your convenience. Or pay more and get less with cable.

very e-z solution. you do what has been said in one of most recent polls. use what cable head-in's use to put on your local on the 8's. they use a Weatherstar scanning device that picks up your local zip code sent out by thru the 2nd feed the weather channels uses, or the one you see on cable. a weatherstar scans the feed constantly, and at the 8s the signal is sent out, you then see the local plug-in on the weather channel and get your local weather. put a weatherstar in select STB's and switch the feed that DirecTV uses to the #2 feed and you have yourself local on the 8's, with no additonal channels, no additional bandwith, and no additional problems. why can't DirecTV do it? I don't know?

Why because DTV has to use 75% of their transponder bandwidth, to give local channels to every single rural area in the USA. Instead of doing that they should offer everyone east and west coast feed of every major OTA network, and use the bandwidth they save to add more national channels and give local content like interactive weather.

I don't miss anything from superior digital cable--because I have it!!

I enjoy much better clarity on all channels, and our HD selection is just awesome--with all the local channels on HD, the INHD channels, Bravo HD, TNT HD , ESPN HD, Discovery HD, and the HDnet/movie channels.

Digital cable can suck my @!#$ with thier high AS$ prices that is if u can really call it digital--theres like only 30-40 in digital quality what they should call it is 1/4digital--analog cable LOL :hurah:

No. They cannot offer everyone east and west coast feeds of every major OTA network. That would be a copyright violation, and DirecTV was sued for this violation in 1998 and 1999.

Besides, of the 46 CONUS transponders DirecTV has licenses, only 10 are being used for local channel delivery. That is a lot less than 75% of DirecTV's transponder bandwidth.

Because that is illegal. DirecTV and Dish would LOVE to do this, but can't because it is against the law.

DirecTV used to have an Interactive Weather channel where you could see the current conditions and a brief forecast, but that went away when they lost Wink in December. I understand they are supposed to have a new Interactive service by the end of the year though. Anyone know what the status of that is?

DVR isn't practical. I can't just at 11 PM turn on the tv. that is when paid programming comes on. DVR isn't that helpful. Also, cable is CHEAPER if you have 4 or more receavers and they offer way more than the DISH in 100% digital quality. At least with Comcast in Fremont, CA. You cannot jump to any conclusion that isn't true. There are cable services that offer more for less at better quality. You can't represent all cable companies as bad.

Huuuhhhh? :scratch: The purpose of a DVR is to time shift programming so you can watch it when YOU want to watch it instead of when it airs. My DVR is filled to capacity with old movies from FMC and TCM, plus the entire season of 24.All of the channels in digital quality, or most of them? If your experience with Comcast is good, then by all means go with them.

My experience has been less than stellar in my area, and there have been more Dishes peing put up in my area (Sacramento, CA). As it stands now, what I pay for Total Choice Plus, no premiums, TiVo service, and two additional receivers is $57.96 minus a $3 credit that will expire with July's statement (one year commitment). According to Comcast's web page, their Digital Choice Package (which is a rough equivelent) with one receiver is $57.44 plus taxes, and they do not offer DVR services in my area (and my DirecTiVO has been modified to record 243 hours of programming). I cannot pull up a cost for each additional receiver needed, and all channels below 100 are analog.

Yes, Comcast has Internet service in my area, but there is a surcharge if you don't bundle it with a cable package. I just disconnected my phone line and replaced it with ADSL service. I'm getting 384k down (burstable to 1M)/128k up, and the service is being shared with my mother's phone line. I was able to use my own ADSL modem/gateway, so the modem handles the authentication, and my PCs are using DHCP to get their IP addys, including a wireless connection to my mother's computer.

I can't honestly say I miss my former cable company. They are terrible! Overpriced & lousy selection of channels. Apparently, I'm not the only one that feels that way, since I am seeing more & more dishes popping up in my neighborhood. :lol:
